A blip of the throttle to match speeds works wonders. As far as damaging the tranny, it has 200K miles on it and besides the 4th gear grind at 150K that was cured with Redline MTL has no problems, so I can't be treating it that badly. I don't see much difference between winding the rpms up thru the tranny on acceleration vs decceleration, that's what it is designed to take. Besides, I don't downshift when I slow down to "save my brakes", I do it because I like to be in the proper gear for any kind of manouever that may be required. You can punch the gas and accelerate out of the way of someone running a light ready to broadside you a LOT faster if you're already in the right gear than you can if you are coasting with the clutch in and in 5th gear riding the brakes and having to downshift into a lower gear, then wait for the engine to wind up. Same thing on the interstate when someone slows down in front of you or pulls out in front of you. I drop the Z into 4th to scrub off some speed, and if a dumbass in the other lane decides to change lanes without looking and tries to merge into me I can step on the gas and move move out of the way, rather than just slamming on the brakes and perhaps getting rearended by someone behind you not paying attention. Emergency manouevers are always faster and more predictible when you have power to aid in the control of the vehicle, rather than just coasting and being at the mercy of the laws of physics.
